The skilled workers use two main pathways for immigration to Canada –
The express entry program is the federal system of Canada immigration that helps the skilled workers relocate to the country in the fastest way possible the time period is six months. The selection of the applicants is through the point-based method where the points of each applicant in the pool is calculated with the help of the CRS tool. This tool used the credentials and personal information to calculate the score of each candidate namely – age, language, education, work experience and adaptability.
There are three program under the Express entry program –
The applicants who wish to be selected through the express entry channel for Canada immigration should apply for immigration through any of these three programs. The FSWP is for first time applicant who have never lived in Canada before, The FSTP is for those applicants who are in skilled trades such as cooks, plumbers and truck drivers and CEC is for the applicants who already have Canadian experience to their credit.
IRCC also conducts the program – specific draws as per which the applicants can be picked from a particular program through which they have applied. In 2022 and 2023 there were many program specific draws especially in CEC and PNP categories.
The express entry profile is the validation from the application and information of the personal details highlighting his interest in moving to Canada. When an express entry profile is created that establishes the fact that the concerned applicant would be interested to be considered for Canada immigration. Also, the creation of profile means that you have provided all the information that is necessary to assess the candidature and evaluate his credentials as suitable for relocation.
The express entry program can be created online and it is the first step in your immigration journey.
The express entry profile needs to be created if the applicant wants to immigrate to Canada with the PR visa. For creating the profile there are certain perquisite that needs to be fulfilled -
1. Language Proficiency Test: The profile is incomplete without the language test score of the applicants. Canada’ two official languages English and French are both considered for the test. The test scores need to be submitted at the time of express entry profile creation and the minimum score required in all three programs - Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Federal Skilled Trades (FST), and Canadian Experience Class (CEC are different).
For English proficiency, you have two testing options:
For French proficiency, you can take either:
To be considered in the profile the language test results should not be more than two years old. In case your test results are about to get expired then you need to retake the language test and get results before expiry.
2. Educational Credential Assessment (ECA): Express entry selects applicants based on the fact that they are skilled in the occupation to which they are applying. For this the education and work experience needs to be established . The ECA determines if the education of the applicant meet the Canadian standards and it needs to be provided at the time of express entry profile creation. In Express Entry subcategories, education is only mandatory for applicants applying under the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program but it is strongly recommended that candidates for the Federal Skilled Trades (FST) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) programs also obtain an ECA. This is because education can significantly improve your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, which impacts your chances of receiving an invitation to apply for PR.
There are eight approved ECA providers, and World Education Services (WES) is highly recommended due to its faster processing time. It’s important to note that an ECA is not required for education completed within Canada.
3. Passport: A valid passport is essential for submitting your Express Entry profile. Without the passport you can travel to Canada and the details of the passport needs to be mentioned in the express entry profile.
Additional Considerations for the express entry profile:
It is important to note that creation of the express entry profile doesn’t guarantee any your immigration to Canada. It is just that you will be assessed based on your credentials with the profile creation.
The ideal time for validity of an express entry profile after it is created is one year i.e 12 months and there are chances that your profile can be removed from the pool if –
As long as you are eligible and you have profile one of the best ways to relocate is to have your spouse profile also been created. This will increase the chance of immigration for both of you. In this case, either of you can get selected for immigration and which ever is selected will become the primary applicant and the other one will be the secondary applicant.

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based system used to rank Express Entry profiles. Points are awarded based on factors like age, education, language ability, and work experience. Higher CRS scores increase your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply(ITA).
After submitting, your profile will be entered into a pool of candidates. If your CRS score meets the cut-off for an Invitation to Apply (ITA), you’ll receive an ITA to submit your application for permanent residence.
Yes, you can update your profile if there are changes in your personal details, such as improved language test results, additional work experience, or a change in marital status. Updating may increase your CRS score.
