Canada Express Entry Draw

What is the Express Entry Draw?

The Express entry program is a skilled based selection of the foreign workers for Canada Immigration. It is a point-based channel of relocation to Canada as per which the applicants need to create an express entry profile with all the details of their education work experience, language skills, age etc and they are put in the express entry pool. Based on the credentials of the applicants the scores are calculated and the candidates are assessed for their capabilities in quantifiable terms and ranked against each other with the help of CRS score calculator. Those applicants who meet the benchmark score as decided by the latest express entry draw are shortlisted and they received the Invitation to apply (ITA).

The interest applicants can apply for Canada immigration through any of the three sub streams of express entry program

The Federal Skilled Workers Program is commonly referred as the 67 point calculator and it is for those applicants who have never lived in Canada before. To be selected the applicants should have a minimum score of 67 out of 100 points.

Check Your Eligibility

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for those applicants who are interested to work in skilled occupations like transport.

The Canadian Experience Class program is for the applicants who already have Canadian experience and now would like to settle in Canada permanently.

In May 2023 The IRCC started a new Express entry draws pattern which is also known as the Category based express entry draws. As per which the applicants whose occupations are in high demand in Canada, they will be selected for immigration faster. These draws are conducted simultaneously with eth regular express entry draws by the IRCC from time to time.

The six occupations which are listed under Category based express entry draws are –

  • Healthcare occupations
  • Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics (STEM) occupations
  • Trades occupations
  • Transport occupations
  • Agriculture and Agri-Food occupations
  • French-language proficiency

What are the key features of the IRCC Express Entry Draws?

To understand how the express entry draws work one should understand its main component. The main features of the IRCC Express Entry Draws are –

  • Understand how many draws are conducted in one years and what is the sequence of these draws along with the timing.
  • The specific dates when the draw occurred provide an insight into recent and upcoming opportunities for candidates.
  • Understand the targeted Express Entry category, such as General, French language proficiency, or specific occupations like STEM, indicating the draws focus.
  • Know the benefit of the Tie-Breaking Rule and how it can be applied to your advantage.
  • What is ideally the minimum Comprehensive Ranking System score required for candidates to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in that draw.
  • How many candidates were invited to apply for permanent residency during the draw.
  • Have details on the number of candidates and their CRS scores so that you can forecast the trends.

What is Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Score?

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based tool used by IRCC to rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. It calculates the points of every applicant based on factors such as age, education, language proficiency, and work experience. The highest-ranking candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

Once the applicant is in the pool they are marked out of 1,200 points. For single applicants without a spouse or common-law partner:

  • Up to 500 points are available for core human capital factors like age, education, language skills, and Canadian work experience.
  • Up to 100 points are awarded for skill transferability factors.
  • Up to 600 points can be earned for additional factors, such as a provincial nomination, valid job offer, Canadian study experience, a sibling in Canada, or French language proficiency.

For candidates with a spouse or common-law partner:

  • Up to 460 points are available for core human capital factors of the principal applicant.
  • Up to 40 points are available for the spouse or partners core factors.
  • Up to 100 points are awarded for skill transferability.
  • Up to 600 points are available for additional factors

How to Get a High CRS Score for express Entry program?

Meeting the CRS score requirement is crucial for being selected by the IRCC for Express Entry Program. Thus, every applicant tries the best to meet the CRS score requirement. It is not always that the score requirements are met but the applicant can resort to different ways to meet the CRS score requirements and these are

  • Education: Points are given for Educational Qualification in CRS, and a Postgraduate degree or diploma has more points than a graduation degree. This is a longer route, but the appellant can increase the education by taking up some additional degrees and getting more points in the ECA.
  • Work experience: You can work for few more years and get your work experience for six years or more to achieve the highest score for work experience.
  • Language Proficiency: High scores in IELTS Language is a good way of scoring high points and increasing the eligibility chances. This is the most popular way of improving the CRS score. The candidate can retake the IELTS test and aim for a high IELTS score next. Higher the IELTS score better are the chances of selection
  • Take up another official Language: There are extra points for those candidates who know Canada's official languages. If you know English, then you can learn French as well for higher points.
  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): It is an alternative method of getting selected for Canada PR. Due to the pandemic situation, there have been many program-specific draws in the past, which means many PNP-specific draws. The provincial nomination allots applicants with additional 600 points, thereby helping in improving the CRS score for the subsequent express entry draw.

Why in recent times we have witnessed a High CRS score for Express Entry?

The core factors because of which we have witnessed a high latest CRS score in the last few years are –

  • Category-based draws have increased the number of invitations mainly in fields like STEM and healthcare and this is a targeted approach which means higher CRS cut-offs
  • Large number of temporary residents in Canada are eligible for programs like the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and this has increased the competition and there high CRS score requirement for selection.
  • Canada is highly popular as a top immigration destination and it has led to a strong demand for Express Entry.

The latest Draw scores for 2024

What is the lowest CRS score ever of the express entry draw?

The lowest accepted CRS score ever was 75 points in the CEC draw which was conducted in February 2021. The lowest CRS score from an all-program draw, targeting Federal Skilled Workers was 413.

What is the Express Entry Next Draw Prediction?

The Next Express entry draw cannot be predicted by anyone. However, there can be strong assumptions made based on the recent IRCC pattern of draws.

In 2024, the category based Express Entry draws have remained unchanged, but IRCC is expected to expand the list in 2025. New categories may include education occupations, as well as roles in natural resources . This will change the priority and draws of IRCC with 30% of Invitations to Apply (ITAs) allocated to candidates in the French proficiency category, 25% to STEM occupations, and 15% to healthcare roles. The remaining 30% will be divided among trades (5%), transportation (3%), agriculture/agri-food (0.5%), and general draws (21.5%).

However, since the target under the 2024-2026 Canada Immigration Levels Plan for the new permanent residents number through Express Entry will increase year-over-year, from around 90,000 in 2024, to 110,770 in 2025. There is an expectation of high economic immigrations in the coming months.
